Lately, a video has been making the rounds in our offices. It’s a recording of a TED Talk by author Simon Sinek on the subject of how great leaders inspire action. (You can view the video for yourself here—it’s a great speech and I encourage everyone to watch it.)
In his talk, Sinek (who is also the author of Start with Why and Leaders Eat Last) explains that the quality that distinguishes great leaders—and great companies—is that they understand their “why.” In other words, they don’t focus on a product or a service. Instead they just explain in the clearest, simplest possible terms why they do what they do. That clarity of vision and purpose is what really inspires people, says Sinek. It’s the key to great leadership.
Of course, that got all of us at Compass Financial Group thinking. What is our “why?” Why do we do what we do?
Building Wealth with a Purpose
We founded our firm to help people build wealth with a purpose. That’s our “why”. It’s that simple.
So many of the conversations about money in our society focus on the wrong thing, at least in our opinion. Usually, people want to know what they can do to get more money. But we believe that only getting money isn’t really the issue you should be most worried about. Of course, money is important. We need it for food, shelter and all kinds of other necessary things. But it’s a means to an end, not an end in itself. What really matters is what you do with the money that you are fortunate enough to have. You could have all the wealth in the world, but if you don’t have purpose (your “why,” to stick with Sinek’s terminology) it would be pretty meaningless.
At Compass Financial Group, we help you define your “why” and then work with you to turn that “why” into reality. Then, we use all the tools at our disposal to guide you to make planning, investment and legacy decisions that fit with your goals and values. Ultimately, we help you build wealth in a way that aligns with the purpose you’ve defined.
Just as your “why” is at the center of the plan we create for you, our “why” informs everything we do as a firm—the services we offer, the people we choose to work with, the professional credentials and training we pursue (like the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy designation), and the initiatives we create and support (like the GIVE Alliance). And by always keeping our “why” in mind, we’re able to fulfill our purpose: to help people pursue their personal and charitable passions by giving them confidence and peace-of-mind about their financial future.
Obviously, not everyone shares our vision about wealth. We’re OK with that. We know that the people who do understand our “why” will get what we do. If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re one of them. And that makes us happy, because we like to do business with people who believe what we believe and who share our values. It’s all part of our commitment to helping people use their money to lead a fulfilling and purposeful life.
